Franco (pictured right: proudly displays the variety of his hand work) claims he can tell everything about a person by their shoes. Franco's venture is in Croydon where he sells his own hand-made footwear, moulded from the finest cow leather and painstakingly sewn by hand. The shoes designed around moulds he makes of a customers feet take up to two weeks to create and can cost from £500 a pair. According to Franco they are worth every penny. Franco was introduced to his trade during leather craft lessons at school in Guyana and has been making shoes since the age of just ten years of age.

When the local tanning factory closed down and leather had to be imported from Brazil making shoes became too expensive for many shoe makers.

Moving to Croydon in 1992 where Franco says: "It is what I love doing. I look forward to making shoes for people. Sometimes when I am working I think I was born to be a shoemaker."

"A good pair of well-made shoes created specifically for an individual should last up to 20 years."

"Young people haven't got the faintest idea about how to look after their feet until they get old .... and then it's too late. They then have surgery for painful bunions.

"I believe it is ill-fitting mass produced cheap shoes that are responsible for this. I am determined to put the traditional trade of cobbling back on the map."

Foot Care... Care For Your Feet

The foot has two vital functions: 1 - to support the weight of the body in standing and walking and 2 - to act as a lever to propel the body forward.

Disorders of the Foot: Deformities of the foot are fairly common and include club foot, flat foot, charcot foot and claw foot. Another common deformity is a bunion, which is thickened bursa (fluid filled pad) overlaying the joint at the base of the big toe.

A number of disorders can affect the skin of the foot. Corns can affect the skin of the foot. Corns are the small areas of thickened skin and are usually caused by tight-fitting shoes. Plantars warts are warts that develop on the skin on the sole. Athletes foot, a fungal infection, mainly affects the skin between the toes, causing it to become itchy, sore and cracked. Gout is a fairly common type of arthritis and often affects the joint in the foot and finally ingrown toe nail.

Why should shoes be repaired properly? Shoe heels should be levelled when repaired so that it is balanced when worn.If the shoes are not balanced the person wearing them will in the future experience back pains and pain in the joints.Hand made shoes are made to measure, they are made especially for you, therefore they fit you better than when you buy a pair of shoes from a High Street shop.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Re-heel all worn down heels
  • Wear shoes that fit YOU and not shoes
  • Try not to wear tight fitted shoesWear comfortable low heel shoes to prevent back pain
  • Have your shoes made - you will then experience the comfort and durability you have always wished for.

Walking on unnatural hard surfaces causes our feet to roll over excessively and arches flatten to gain ground contact. This often results in:

  • Rubbing and friction of the toes causing callous, corn and and bunions
  • Collapsing of the forefront arch - the cuase of ball of foot pain
  • Stretching of the ligaments in the arch resulting in heel pain, arch pain and achilles pain
